Top 5 Tech Companies To Buy For 2014

As more and more people are cutting the cord when it comes to home entertainment, competition in the industry has never been more intense. Broadcast gave way to cable before satellite became an option, and now technology is driving the fight and offering an increasing number of choices. Four identifiable segments are beginning to emerge: cable and satellite, streaming video, TV enhancement, and advanced options.

In Part 1 of this series, I examined the traditional players -- including cable and satellite providers, as well as communications companies that have begun to get into the game. Today, I'll examine the various streaming video options. There is some overlap in certain cases, but by understanding each segment individually, you'll get a clearer picture of the overall industry.

The streaming video players
Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX  ) : As the first mover in streaming video, Netflix has a clear advantage over its competitors. Netflix stock has taken investors on a roller-coaster ride over the past few years. In 2011, shares were trading just below $300 when the company announced the massive price increase and the bifurcation of the DVD business. Netflix stock became a case study in how to kill the golden goose, seeing the stock drop to just over $60 last fall. The stock is now knocking on $250 again.

Judging from the company it's keeping Green Automotive Co. (OTCMKTS:GACR) may have just made its way into the upper echelon of small cap stock opportunities. The electric car company joins Elite Pharmaceuticals Inc. (OTCBB:ELTP), Amarantus Bioscience Holdings, Inc. (OTCBB:AMBS), and only three other companies as Wall-Street.com's "Best 6 Stocks" for January of 2014. As one of the top information resources for investors - particularly in terms of information regarding small and micro cap stocks - being named among the site's top pick is an accolade for AMBS, ELTP, and GACR. Even more impressive is that Green Automotive Co. was the only consumer-goods name among those six. Amarantus Bioscience Holdings and Elite Pharmaceuticals are biotechnology names... an industry that can and often does attract a lot of attention just by the nature of the business. The other three names making the "Best 6" list were an energy explorer, a power-management technology manufacturer, and prescription/medical food producer. For an electric car manufacturer to make the list speaks quite highly of GACR.

At first glance, Amarantus Bioscience Holdings, Inc. (OTCBB:AMBS) doesn't look like anything more than a volatile mess. It's up 17% today, but had been up twice that amount this morning. Even more exhausting is the fact AMBS, currently at $0.0529, had been as high as $0.089 and as low as $0.039 within the past three months. Point being, Amarantus Bioscience Holdings has been, and continues to be, all over the map.

There's no denying Tesla Motors Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) has been one of year's top investment stories, with shares running up from less than $40 to more than $194 in just a few short months. But, as one might imagine, that 385% runup from TSLA creates something of a disconnect between the company and its share price. Time to head for the exit. Instead, a better use of that now-considerably-greater capital is a position in Digital Ally, Inc. (NASDAQ:DGLY) ... a stock that's also had a pretty good 2014, but has suffered more than a small setback since mid-September. Specifically, DGLY has pulled back from a peak price of $17.47 to a low of $9.88 as of Friday. But, it looks like that correction may have already come to an end.

Rackspace Hosting, Inc. (NYSE: RAX) is supposed to be a winner from the small and mid-sized businesses moving to the cloud rather than in-house, but its earnings report early in the week showed that profits were down 40%. A rise in revenue was not assisted because higher expenses and operating costs are hurting here. Investors are getting used to disappointment here. A small gain of 1.3% to $42.21 on Friday was dwarfed by the losses earlier in the week as this was a $49.31 stock before earnings. That makes for another 14% post-earnings loss and now has the stock down by almost half from its 52-week high. Something has to give in here one way or another as well, because Rackspace still trades at 57-times expected 2014 earnings.

Bradley C. Bower/Bloomberg/Getty Images In any given week, some stocks are sure to shoot up, and others will plummet. The big gainers inspire us to keep investing. The presence of the decliners keeps our greed in check while reminding us about the risks of the equity markets. Let's go over some of last week's best and worst performers. Avanir Pharmaceuticals (AVNR) -- Up 64 percent last week Last week's biggest gainer was Avanir Pharmaceuticals. The volatile biotech soared after revealing favorable clinical trials data on its AVP-923 drug candidate that treats agitation associated with Alzheimer's. This is a major hurdle cleared on the long path to gaining regulatory approval, but this is just the second of three clinical trial phases that Avanir needs to shine through to get its treatment on the market. Novatel Wireless (NVTL) -- Up 33 percent last week Novatel Wireless moved higher after IT products distributor and services provider Synnex announced an expanded deal to offer Novatel products throughout the U.S. and Canada. H.C. Wainwright followed by initiating coverage of Novatel with a buy rating and a $4 price target that it deems as conservative and one that it's likely to raise "sooner rather than later." Apogee Enterprises (APOG) -- Up 14 percent last week There weren't too many companies reporting quarterly results last week, but Apogee was one that managed to shine through. The provider of value-added glass products and services saw revenue soar 30 percent in its latest quarter. Adjusted earnings climbed 67 percent to $0.35 a share, beating Wall Street expectations. The strong showing finds Apogee raising its outlook for fiscal 2015. VirnetX (VHC) -- Down 65 percent last week The market's biggest loser was VirnetX, shedding nearly two-thirds of its value after an unfavorable patent ruling. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit rejected a jury award of $368.2 million that VirnetX initially won against Apple (AAPL) in 2012 for patent
