Elsewhere, losers were few and far between, but many gold stocks remained under pressure as the yellow metal only managed a modest bounce after yesterday's plunge. In particular, major producer Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) and gold miner IAMGOLD (NYSE: IAG  ) fell between 4% and 5%. Both companies were on the list of holdings of billionaire hedge fund investor John Paulson's gold fund as of Dec. 31, and with rumors circulating that Paulson may have to liquidate positions to handle coming redemption requests, the stocks that he reportedly owns could see further selling pressure even if gold bullion prices rise.

Lessons Learned from "The Little Book that Builds Wealth" by Pat Dorsey

Economic moats can protect companies from competition, helping them earn more money for a long time, and therefore making them more valuable to an investor. Return on capital (ROC) is the best way to judge a company profitability. Mistaken Moats: 1) Great products (i.e. Krispy Kreme, Netscape), 2) strong market share (i.e. Chrysler minivan, IBM PCs, General Motors), 3) great execution (i.e. Kodak), and 4) great management (i.e. JetBlue). They do not create long-term competitive advantages. They are nice to have, but theye not enough. The four sources of structural competitive advantage are 1) intangible assets (brands, patents, licenses, etc.), 2) customer switching costs (products or services that are hard to give up, like banks), 3) network economics (i.e. credit cards, Microsoft Windows and Office), and 4) cost advantages (stems from process, location, scale or access to a unique asset). If you found a company with one of these characteristics with solid ROC, youe probably found a company with an economic moat. It easier to create a competitive advantage in some industries than it is in others. See page 118 for Moats by Sector. Measuring Return on Capital: Return on Assets (ROA) measures how much income a company generates per dollar of assets. Return on Equity (ROE) measures the efficiency with which a company uses shareholdersequity and is a great overall measure on returns on capital. (Note: A flaw in using ROE is a company can take on a lot of debt and boost ROE without becoming more profitable.) Return on Invested Capital (ROIC) combines the best in both worlds by measuring the return on all capital invested in the firm (both debt and equity). Bet on the horse, not the jockey. Management matters, but far less than moats. The Moat Process on page 145:

Has the firm historically generated solid ROC?

Question: What is your view on Travelers (TRV) competitive advantage? How troubling is the huge fixed-income portion of their investment portfolio (in relation to future inflation)? How much do you like Jay Fishman? I really like the fact they are aggressively repurchasing shares and the fact that it is trading at book value, which I estimate to earn around 13% (ROE).

Next, I turned to an evaluation of gross profit margin (gpm), net profit margin (npm), return on assets (roa), return on equity (roe) and return on invested capital (roi). The example below only includes gross and net profit margin, however, I review data on all the metrics stated above.

Beer Man is a weekly profile of beers from across the country and around the world.

This week: Into the Woods

New Holland Brewing Co., Holland, Mich.

http://newhollandbrew.com

Once again, our winter weather here in Wisconsin has dipped into minus double digits this time 20 below zero, not including the wind chill and it's days like this that make me appreciate beers such as New Holland's Into the Woods even more.

The label simply describes it as a brown ale, but that is like calling a Porsche "just a car." This is a special beer, for although it's a brown ale without the extreme alcohol content (6.5% ABV) of many "winter warmers," it has much more flavor than the typical brown ales I run into.

The roasted malts were the main aroma upon pouring the dark brown liquid. A thin, tan creamy head formed, sinking quickly but retaining a thin layer that would once again thicken with a couple swirls of the glass.

Airbus And Boeing’s Battle For Dominance Continues With Delta Order

Airbus (EADSY) and Boeing's (BA) battle for supremacy in the aviation market is never ending. In one such similar event, European plane maker Airbus bagged a crucial order from Delta Air Lines (DAL) for A330neo and A350 which is valued at $14.3 billion at list price, which does not account for the discount offered by the plane maker. This is an essential deal for the player as Boeing dominates the wide-body market and this order would give Airbus a boost.

The deal in details Delta is the third largest carrier by traffic in the U.S. This clearly shows that the order win from the U.S. operator is a big matter for the French manufacturer. Delta has placed orders for 25 long haul A350-900s and 25 A330-900neo, said a person familiar with the matter.

Through the orders for the A330neo and A350, Airbus would be able to expand its market share in the wide-body space. The company had announced the A330neo program at the Farnborough Air Show that took place in July, and it's raining orders for this plane. The aircraft is a re-engineered version of the popular A330 plane. The upgraded aircraft would sport Rolls Royce engines. Adding news engines have helped Airbus to extend the product life cycle of the plane.

On the other hand, the A350 is about to enter service the next month with the first delivery going to its launch customer, Qatar Airways. Airbus is extremely hopeful about these two planes and expects good number of orders to come for it. Both these aircraft boast of greater fuel efficiency over existing planes. On being question regarding the Delta orders, both Airbus and Delta refused to comment.

The battleground gets fierce Delta had disclosed its plan to buy 50 long range planes back in April this year as it was looking to substitute the fleet of Boeing 767-300ER and the 747-400 jumbo jets. The operator was weighing both Airbus and Boeing options. The airline was comparing the A350 and A330 with the 777 and the 787 Dreamliner. Finally the Atlanta based operator chose Airbus A350 and A330 over Boeing's offerings. However, it still has orders for 18 Dreamliners that was bought by Northwest Airlines in 2005 aft

Indian startup funding up 261%

snapdeal softbank ceo SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son is an investor in India's Alibaba: SnapDeal. NEW YORK (CNNMoney) What will be the next Alibaba?

Look to India -- investors are.

In fact, venture capital funding to Indian startups is up 261% from 2013, totaling $3.86 billion to date, according to PrivCo.

"If you look at India's growth and demographic, you can see that the next hot tech market after China is India," said PrivCo senior analyst Matt Turlip.

As in China, Indian e-commerce is especially hot.

Flipkart Online Services -- an Amazon (AMZN, Tech30) and Alibaba (BABA, Tech30)-like marketplace -- received $1 billion in funding in July.

"That's one of the best-funded startups in the world -- not just in India," said Turlip.

Flipkart rival SnapDeal also captured $653 million in October, for a total of $1 billion just this year.

SoftBank, the Japanese VC firm that was an early investor in Alibaba, has been funneling money into the Indian marketplace. In the last couple months, it invested $800 million in SnapDeal and Olacabs (the Uber of India). It also took a 36.5% stake in ScoopWhoop (India's Buzzfeed).

Tinder's popularity grows in India   Tinder's popularity grows in India

Also actively investing are major VC firms Sequoia Capital (known for early-stage investments Google (GOOG) and Apple (AAPL, Tech30)) and Accel Partners (an early investor in Facebook (FB, Tech30)).

Investors and entrepreneurs are smart to capitalize on the Indian market.

"500 million people will be coming online over the next three to four years on inexpensive smartphones," said Vivek Wadhwa, an Indian-American a! cademic and entrepreneur. "This will create an Internet revolution that will make our dot-com boom seem lame."

These soon-to-be connected consumers are also young -- making them an ideal e-commerce target.

By 2050, India is expected to be the most populated country with the largest economy, according to Pew. Half of its 1.25 billion residents are currently under the age of 25 -- and by 2020, it's set to become the world's youngest country with an average age of 29.

Microsoft (MSFT, Tech30) has tuned into this. This month, the company announced plans to bring free Internet access to India with three data centers throughout the country. CEO Satya Nadella said the company sees a $2 trillion opportunity in the Indian market.

According to Sharad Sharma, an angel investor based in Bengaluru, India, the majority of India's startup talent is coming from the country's multinational R&D centers like Google, HP (HPQ, Tech30) and Cisco (CSCO, Tech30).

As cloud-based solutions have grown, the need for these IT hubs has slowed. This has many Indian entrepreneurs leaving the corporate world and launching startups.

"Employees are starting to feel stagnation as parent companies slow down," said Sharma. "Essentially, these employees are going from building global software products for [corporations] to building them for their own startups."

West Marine (Nasdaq: WMAR) is an undervalued retailer.  The company is going through a change in focus from a bricks and mortar boat product retailer to a fully integrated retail and wholesale business through bricks and clicks, targeting the boating and water enthusiast customer.   Recent results have been affected by a severe rainy and cool spring which hurt boat usage and delayed the start of the season.  The company has accelerated cash investments to build larger more productive stores and expand its ecommerce abilities, consequently affecting free cash flow short term.  The stock lacks sponsorship as there is only one research report written on the company by a small boutique firm.  The stock trades at only book value despite the company being the leading industry player with a solid balance sheet and significant net cash position.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Adam Levine-Weinberg]

In the past month, the budget tablet segment experienced a new round of price cuts by major manufacturers. Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS  ) initiated this new price war as the company dramatically slashed the prices of its soon-to-be-discontinued Nook HD and Nook HD+ tablets to clear inventory. Other vendors such as Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) and Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ  ) have followed suit with more modest price reductions.

    4. Movers and shakers -- Barnes and Noble, General Mills, Apollo Education: Barnes and Noble (BKS) shares soared as much as 10% after the struggling bookseller said it has begun taking steps to separate its retail and Nook segments.

  • [By Patricio Kehoe] o contribute to sales growth.

Moreover, the company product launches throughout 2013 improved substantially, with Disguise new Halloween costumes, kidsfurniture, Tollytots infant and preschool products, Outdoor Engineer Sports products and Maui ToysImpulse line driving sales. The recent integration of technology and novelty in its product launches, via Dream Play and Technology Kid, has received positive responses from customers and I think this angle could provide the base for JAKKS's future profits. The firm international efforts are also impressive, and 2014 should be a prime year for profits in this segment, as the firm obtained rights for the Sofia doll line in Latin America, Australia, Taiwan and China, while Walt Disney Company (DIS) Princess doll sales remain strong in Europe.

    Valuation

With 2013 weak financial results in mind, it no surprise that JAKKS is focused on turning its losses around into profitability. Earnings per share posted a $2.43 loss for 2013, while the third quarter showed a $0.50 loss. And despite quarterly revenue growth of 3.1% year over year, due to improved sales in the Novelty, Role Playing and Seasonal toy segment, annual revenue declined by 5.0%, closing at $632 million. However, EPS has returned to an upward trend, and investors should expect 2014 to show profitability, with EPS ranging between $0.30 and $0.40. The company aggressive restructuring plan and cost saving initiatives, which include reduction in leased space, employees and overhead expenses, should help regain momentum throughout 2014, leading to growing revenue and margin expansion.

However, I must point out that 2013 restructuring plan also led to the suspension of JAKKS's quarterly dividend, making competitors like Hasbro Inc. (HAS) and Mattel Inc. (MAT) much more attractive investment options, given their consistent dividend increases. Nonetheless, I believe JAKKS has the potential to regain

For the past year, Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS  ) has been rowing its little boat in unforgiving waters -- borne up and down on the waves, but pulled ever on by tireless effort. Unfortunately the little boat also had a full-grown elephant duct-taped to its side -- that didn't help. But now the company has cut the Nook free, and it's not even pausing to watch the gray trunk sink under as it presses ever forward.

GENEVA (AP) The 2014 World Cup is the most valuable, lucrative and expensive in FIFA history.

Record numbers include a $35 million prize to the winning team's federation, $4 billion commercial revenue for FIFA and a $14 billion bill for Brazil.

With 3 million tickets available to buy, the 64-match tournament is almost sold out.

"The financial success we have it, it is done," FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke has said. "The ticket sales success is there, we have never sold so many tickets."

FIFA's satisfaction is not shared across Brazil.

Taxpayers are picking up the biggest bill, with the country of 200 million people running up costs several times more than FIFA to stage the world's most-watched sports event.

The $14 billion total is the predicted spending on building and renovating 12 stadiums, upgrading federal, state and city infrastructure, plus security plans to welcome the 32 teams and around 600,000 expected visitors.

Advisors' Opinion:

    An appropriate reaction?
The market's reaction to railroad companies hasn't been favorable. Canadian National Railway (NYSE: CNI  ) (NYSE: CNI  ) traded down today by 0.6%, while Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP  ) (NYSE: UNP  ) lost more than 0.7% of its market value. Clearly, the markets took Saturday's accident seriously. However, with so much crude oil ready for cross-country trips, railroad companies are unlikely to be affected in the grander scheme of things, at least in the near term.

  • [By Isac Simon]

Finally, until the Keystone XL pipeline comes on line -- or gets scrapped, for that matter -- Canadian National Railway (NYSE: CNI  ) will remain the specialist operator in transporting crude oil from Alberta's oil sands. In the last 12 months, the company's stock has risen 16%. The best part? A surge in oil production can easily be accommodated. With Enbridge's Northern Gateway pipeline rejected by the British Columbia government, Canadian National should enjoy the monopoly in transporting crude for the foreseeable future.

Best Quality Stocks To Buy For 2014

Vodafone Group Plc (VOD) recently announced the sale of it's 45% stake in the Verizon Wireless (VZW) joint venture it started with Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) back in 2000. It seems almost from the start VZ has been trying to gain 100% control of it's wireless business. And who can blame them? This is a 13-year saga that has finally come to a close.

I have a fairly substantial position in VOD, as I currently own 150 shares of Vodafone worth $4,801.05based on today's closing value of $32.01 per ADR share. It's important to note that VOD is based in the U.K., and as such I invest in the company through American Depository Receipt shares. Each VOD ADR is worth 10 ordinary shares.

I've long been a fan of Vodafone.

I've been a very happy investor in Vodafone, as it carried less debt than other major telecommunication companies, had much less exposure to legacy costs associated with wireline businesses because they're primarily a wireless company and they had broad geographic exposure to Europe, India, Africa, Australia and the U.S. (through 45% of VZW). In addition, it's always seemed that the market discounted it's assets, as they were usually cheaper than most of the other options and generally had higher quality assets that had broader exposure throughout the world.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another technology player that's starting to move within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is InvenSense (INVN), which designs, develops, markets, and sells micro-electro-mechanical system gyroscopes for motion tracking devices in consumer electronics. This stock has been red hot in 2013, with shares up huge by 63%.

If you look at the chart for InvenSense, you'll notice that this stock has been trending sideways and consolidating for the last two months, with shares moving between $15.20 on the downside and $18.31 on the upside. Shares of INVN have now started to spike higher back above its 50-day moving average of $17.41 a share. That move is quickly pushing shares of INVN within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in INVN if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $18.31 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average volume of 2.32 million shares. If that breakout hits soon, then INVN will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $21.82 to its all-time high at $22.35 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give INVN a chance to tag $25 to $30 a share.

Traders can look to buy INVN off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right around some key near-term support levels at $16.42 a share to its 200-day moving average of $15.25 a share. One can also buy INVN off strength once it starts to take $18.31 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Top 10 Value Stocks To Buy For 2014

Investopedia defines risk as:

The chance that an investment's actual return will be different than expected. Risk includes the possibility of losing some or all of the original investment.

To address risk in a modern sense, the noted "margin of safety" author and investor, Howard Marks (in his book, The Most Important Thing) wrote:

Great investing requires both generating returns and controlling risk. And recognizing risk is an absolute prerequisite for controlling it.

Marks went on to explain:

When you boil it all down, it's the investor's job to intelligently bear risk for profit. Doing it well separates the best from the rest.

The Intelligent REIT Investor Recognizes Mispriced Risk

Two weeks ago I wrote a Seeking Alpha article (3 Healthcare REITs With Mispriced Risk) in which I warned that several REITs were becoming risky based on underlying income fundamentals. As I explained:

It's clear to see that these "higher risk" assets are also driving the returns, and it's important for investors to understand the risks and the value proposition of investing in lower quality vs. higher quality assets. Simply said, OHI, MPW, and AVIV have all turned in outstanding total returns in recent months; however, there is reason to believe there is a lower margin of safety when there is mispriced risk.

Last year, CARBO made almost half of its total revenue from just two customers: Halliburton (NYSE: HAL  ) and Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) . A dependence on major players can be part of the game in this energy niche, as much of the onshore drilling services industry is in fact dominated by Halliburton and Schlumberger. However, CARBO's deepwater proppant could help it diversify in a big way, provided the company can handle what are sure to be more bothersome logistics problems than already exist with its land-based delivery network. Creating more distribution hubs closer to oil fields can help CARBO reduce its transportation costs and further reduce its dependence on the big two's infrastructure.
