5 Best Rising Stocks To Own Right Now

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- As most investors know, emerging markets have been subject to panic selling for the last couple of months, with the main focus on Turkey, South Africa and the Ukraine. The panic has hurt equity prices in most of the emerging markets. The iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (EEM) is down 6.3% year to date, according to Google Finance.

This type of indiscriminate selling is not new, of course, and it potentially creates an opportunity to buy an emerging market with seemingly no fundamental connection to the current panic. One such country is Colombia and the Global X FTSE Colombia 20 ETF (GXG).

Fundamentally, Colombia's GDP growth has been solid at 4.8% in 2012, 4.5% in 2013 and, according to Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria estimates, 5% for 2014. Inflation is running at 2%, which is surprisingly low considering inflation is more than 10% in Argentina and 5.5% in Brazil. Colombia also fares will with a debt to GDP ratio of 32% and a small current account deficit.

As I write this, Tortoise Pipeline and Energy (NYSE: TTP) trades at a discount of 15.1 percent to its underlying assets, while at the other end of the spectrum Cushing MLP Total Return Fund (NYSE: SRV) trades at a 17.4 percent premium. The average MLP closed-end fund listed trades at a 4.9 percent discount, which is perhaps reasonable given the loss of certain tax advantages and the fact that management fees will eat into returns.

Goldman Sachs reported on Friday that it has cut its rating on Sonoco Products Company (SON).

The firm has downgraded SON from “Neutral” to “Sell,” and has maintained its current $36 price target. This price target suggests a 9% upside from the stock’s current price of $39.58.

An analyst from the firm noted: “We downgrade SON to Sell (relative to our coverage) from Neutral on a lower projected EPS CAGR through 2015 (7% vs. 15% for group) and relative valuation SON shares are trading at 15.4X 2014E P/E, ahead of the Packaging group average at 14.6X, and its 5-year historical average of 13.2X. However, our 3Q EPS for SON is largely in line with consensus and we do not expect the 3Q print to be a catalyst for underperformance.”
