As a search engine,�Yahoo! (NASDAQ: YHOO  ) has fallen to a distant third in the market, taking a paltry 11.1% share last month compared to�Google's (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) 66.9%�and Microsoft's�18.1%.�(Remember, though, that Bing still powers Yahoo! search, despite Yahoo!'s attempts to move away from its partnership with Microsoft.)�

Not so long ago, Yahoo!'s steadily declining search traffic would have been a major concern -- after all, that's what Yahoo! is all about, right? Not anymore.

As expected, Yahoo! inked a deal on Monday for news icon Katie Couric to become its "global anchor." Signing a name like Couric is noteworthy in and of itself, but for Yahoo! and its shareholders, the deal epitomizes the vision of CEO Marissa Mayer. And combined with recent data from digital media research firm comScore, it's clear Yahoo!'s new direction is working.

A new direction
Overloading Yahoo!'s home page with loads of graphics and content, particularly before today's fast Internet connections, was nearly the end of the service as we know it. Google's clean, fast-loading site was the easy choice for users wanting quick search results minus all the clutter. Clearly, trying to be all things to all people wasn't working, though none of Yahoo!'s multiple CEOs in the past five years could seem to figure that out.

    Time Warner (NYSE: TWX  ) owns HBO. While it is smaller than Starz by subscriber count, the network has a near-flawless record in its recent original productions. Titles such as Game of Thrones, Girls, and True Blood have been tremendous successes in attracting and retaining subscribers. Time Warner trades at 14.12 times forward earnings, but includes many other factors -- from film studio Warner Brothers to theme parks. Showtime parent CBS (NYSE: CBS  ) trades at just over 15 times earnings. All three networks have attractive economics as they have pushed original content that, though costly up front, creates better margins over time and saves the company from some difficult negotiations with other content providers. Recently, the company ended its contract with both Netflix and Disney, startling some investors and analysts but ultimately proving a wise decision as it freed up cash to put toward in-house production.

    It's been a solid year for Thompson Reuters (TRI); since the calendar flipped over to January, this $30 billion financial media firm has rallied more than 22%. But don't worry if you've missed out on the move -- TRI looks well-positioned for higher levels thanks to the pattern that's been setting up in shares.

    Thompson Reuters is currently forming an ascending triangle pattern, a bullish setup that's formed by horizontal resistance above shares at the $35.50 level and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as TRI bounces in between those two technically-important price levels, it's getting squeezed closer and closer to a confirmed breakout above that $35.50 price level. When the breakout happens, it's time to be a buyer.

    TRI closed above the $35.50 level in yesterday's session, but it's a little early to call it a breakout just yet. If shares can hold above that breakout level all through today's session, then the buy signal is worth heeding.

    The new News Corp. (NASDAQ: NWSA  ) has a lot to prove as a stand-alone company.

    This News Corp. is the product of a split between the former media conglomerate also known as News Corp., which then consisted of one company containing ample entertainment, broadcasting, and print-media assets. When the old News Corp.     2. DirecTV spikes after AT&T acquisition rumors
    According to company insiders that leaked rumors to The Wall Street Journal,�communications giant�AT&T (NYSE: T  ) �is adding�DirecTV (NASDAQ: DTV  ) �to its family plan. The deal could be announced in as soon as two weeks.

    Like any wise subject of rumors, both companies declined to comment publicly. But if you're trying to trade stocks�based on official announcements�only, then you're going to get burned. Savvy traders make moves on rumors like these to snatch the stock at a cheaper price before the rest hear about the big news. DTV is trading up over 5% since the article hit the wire.

    AT&T needs video to keep profiting off what�people are demanding, and DirecTV needs better broadband Internet infrastructure. So it's a perfect match. The big question is what combination of debt and new stock�AT&T needs to issue to raise the necessary cash. Reports say that the deal could value DirecTV at $50 billion, so DTV's stock price is rising in anticipation of the big buyout for shareholders.
