West Marine, Inc., incorporated in September 1993, is a specialty retailer of boating supplies and accessories. The Company offers an assortment of merchandise for the boat and for the boater. It operates in three segments: Stores, Port Supply and Direct-to-Customer. The Company sells to both retail and wholesale customers in its Stores segment. In addition, the Company has three franchised stores in Turkey. The Company�� Port Supply segment is its wholesale segment. The Company�� Direct-to-Customer, which includes e-commerce, catalog and call center transactions.     HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Hong Kong stocks swung between small gains and losses early Thursday after hitting a seven-month high in the previous session, with the Hang Seng Index (HK:HSI) down less than 0.1%. Most mainland Chinese property developers outperformed the markets, with Guangzhou R&F Properties Co.     In the past month, the budget tablet segment experienced a new round of price cuts by major manufacturers. Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS  ) initiated this new price war as the company dramatically slashed the prices of its soon-to-be-discontinued Nook HD and Nook HD+ tablets to clear inventory. Other vendors such as Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) and Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ  ) have followed suit with more modest price reductions.

Earnings per share posted a $2.43 loss for 2013, while the third quarter showed a $0.50 loss. And despite quarterly revenue growth of 3.1% year over year, due to improved sales in the Novelty, Role Playing and Seasonal toy segment, annual revenue declined by 5.0%, closing at $632 million. However, EPS has returned to an upward trend, and investors should expect 2014 to show profitability, with EPS ranging between $0.30 and $0.40. The company�� aggressive restructuring plan and cost saving initiatives, which include reduction in leased space, employees and overhead expenses, should help regain momentum throughout 2014, leading to growing revenue and margin expansion.

    However, I must point out that 2013�� restructuring plan also led to the suspension of JAKKS's quarterly dividend, making competitors like Hasbro Inc. (HAS) and Mattel Inc.     For the past year, Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS  ) has been rowing its little boat in unforgiving waters -- borne up and down on the waves, but pulled ever on by tireless effort. Unfortunately the little boat also had a full-grown elephant duct-taped to its side -- that didn't help. But now the company has cut the Nook free, and it's not even pausing to watch the gray trunk sink under as it presses ever forward.
